QUEEN'S ROAD WIMBLEDON
The proposed design to redevelop a brownfield site in Wimbledon is the result of a comprehensive study of the characteristics of the grand Georgian townhouses of the Regency period, especially the spatial configuration and room distribution, as well as the ornamented wrought iron balconies and details. The tripartite scheme often found in these properties has been adapted to the dimensions of the plot and to the intention of proposing a contemporary project that focuses on providing grand spaces and robust environmental passive strategies such as solar protection devices and natural ventilation. The central band of the scheme divides the floor plan between south and north-facing spaces. It also hosts a sculptural stair and is topped by a skylight that confers a dramatic character to the space, natural ventilation, and illumination of the internal spaces. The south façade, articulated by a screen of timber rolling shutters running along curvy wrought iron guides, represents the face of the project from the access road. The north façade overlooking the rear gardens is set back at the top floors to maximize the sunlight into these. The design materializes using a palette of natural materials: stone, timber, and vegetation. The tiered rear garden levels protect the root area of the trees, separating the houses from the railway tracks and preserving the mature and high trees that form a natural backdrop to the views from the rooms facing north.
